Along the drive up the highlands we saw lots of sheep and highland cows. They have a hairy thatch on their forehead and curved horns. And they're big! We had some beautiful views of the moors and heather covered bogs.
Loch Ness was very rough and windy today. A pretty sight but no Nessie to be seen. The long and narrow lake is set off by the craggy mountains in the distance.
Invergordon is a pretty town set amid the highland hills. The barley crops and sheep pens surround it. The Ness river rushes through the center of town and the Inverness castle overlooks it's banks. We had lunch here of delicious fish.
Balnuaran of clava was our next stop and I stood beside the split stone where Clare began her journey in Outlander. There were many upright stones there.
Our day ended with a visit to Culloden where so many clansmen died supporting Bonnie Prince Charlie. After the British defeated them the clans were forbidden to exist. Eventually the old ways resurfaced and even the Gallic language is being spoken and taught in schools once again.
Many distilleries create whiskey here and is the biggest export from UK. We will research more tomorrow in Edinburgh. It would take years to learn about all of them!!!!!
I've always wanted to to to The Highlands. I'm enjoying your photos and descriptions.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. It looks so cold and damp there.
